Lice Happens is a professional and mobile lice removal and treatment service that helps families living in Summit, New Jersey who are experiencing a lice outbreak.  Our services are 100% private and confidential; our vehicles are even logo-free to help ensure your privacy.  We serve our clients in the comfort of their homes so they never have to worry about going out in public to handle their lice outbreaks.

We understand that lice can be embarrassing.  Though our motto is “No shame, no blame” we know that there can be a certain stigma associated with head lice.  One of the main things we do at Lice Happens is educate families and individuals about the myths that surround head lice.  There are a lot of common misconceptions and we love setting the record straight.

Who gets head lice has nothing to do with hygiene or the cleanliness of a home.  Lice do not discriminate when it comes to seeking new hosts.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, between six to 12 million people get head lice in the United States annually, so it’s more common that most people realize.  Lice do not fly or jump, but they do crawl fast.  When children are around each other, it is common to see them making head-to-head contact.  Kids do not value personal space the same way adults do and they huddle together often.  When one child is infected with head lice and he or she presses his or her head against another child who doesn’t have head lice, the lice will spread.  It doesn’t take much, and it’s impossible to pinpoint the source of the head lice.  They spread that quickly.

Lice do not care about how clean a person’s head is, how clean a home is, the age of a host, the ethnicity of a host, or the gender of a host.  Lice are parasites that have one goal, to find a food source.  Lice require human blood to survive.  They pose no health hazards, but they can be rather irritating and cause allergic reactions to the skin.  Without a human host, lice cannot survive for more than 24 hours.

Lice Happens recommends regular screenings for head lice in young children.  When one of our highly trained lice removal and treatment specialists arrives at your home, he or she will screen every member of your family for head lice.  Because lice spread so easily and because not everyone displays the common symptoms of having head lice, this is an important step to making sure the life cycle of the head lice is ended.  We work hard to eliminate your lice problem with just one visit to your home.  The specialist will also teach you this important skill and what to look for when trying to identify head lice.  It can be easy to mistake dandruff, hairspray or hair products, and dirt for head lice eggs (nits).  Early detection allows for prompt treatments.  When treatments are prompt and head lice are stopped, the spread stops too.  This is why we recommend regular screenings for kids.

Our treatments are natural, safe, and gentle for all skin types and ages.  We use only non-toxic solutions to treat for head lice.  Our treatments are made from pesticide free and environmentally friendly ingredients.  They have no side effects.  This is different from anything you might find over-the-counter.  OTC treatments are becoming less and less effective as lice adapt to the pesticides and chemicals used to create these remedies.  They can be harmful to you and your loved ones, cause severe allergic reactions, and are just plain ineffective.

Our specialists have a lot of practice removing nits, young lice (nymphs), and adult lice from hair.  OTC treatments don’t provide this professional service, and combing is perhaps the most important part of the lice removal process.  It is essential that all nits, nymphs, and lice are removed from the hair or lice will continue to hatch, breed, and spread.  We use only fine toothed metal lice combs for this process and we will teach you how to use these combs too.  Follow up care is an essential part of the process too, but you’ll have everything you need to confidently provide this to your family in the days after the initial treatment.

In addition to teaching the valuable skills of screening and combing, our specialist will talk to you about lice while he or she is treating your family.  This education comes at no additional cost, and we’ll never delay treatment times for which you are charged extra.  Topics we cover include who gets lice, how lice spread, hygiene, home care, treatment options, preventative measures to take, and many more topics.  We love making fellow lice experts out of our clients because we think that knowledge is power.  Our goal is to make sure that you feel like you can handle a lice infestation in the future should the need ever arise, though we hope it doesn’t!
